What Is the Difference Between Cloud PACS and Local PACS?

in Technology

1. How They Work?

Local PACS

The primary difference between the two PACS system is how they work. A local PACS has hardware systems and the patient data is stored in drives. As these drives are connected to the computers or systems, they give access to the patient data and records. It has its own hardware and onsite structure.

Cloud PACS

In this system, the patient data is stored in an online storage which is accessible by everyone who has permission. In cloud PACS, there are no onsite systems. The infrastructure is maintained by the service providers. The data is uploaded and it gets shared with everyone automatically.

2. Storage

Local PACS

When it comes to the storage, the infrastructure and the servers are located within the hospital. They have complete control over everything including making changes. But the system needs space as well as regular maintenance and repairing. In local PACS, limited storage can be a problem.

Cloud PACS

In the cloud based PACS system, the vendor that provides cloud services is responsible for the infrastructure and servers. The hardware devices are distant. The hospitals just get access to the cloud system where they can access the file anytime unless they are connected to the internet. It offers more storage space.

3. Access

Local PACS

In local PACS, the staff and doctors can access the data and system by using computers. But they will have to install the software or use the web. This is good when it comes to better security. It also limits access when you don’t have enough devices with the software.

Cloud PACS

In cloud PACS, there is no restriction of having the software or apps. Anyone who has an account and is granted permission can access the system and data using their own devices. They can install the app but it is not mandatory.

4. Disaster Recovery

Local PACS

In case of any disasters, the data might be lost in the local systems. As the data and files are stored in hard drives, they need to be backed up to avoid data loss problems. This makes data back-up more expensive as it requires additional storage drives and systems.

Cloud PACS

However, this is not a problem with the cloud-based PACS system from the trusted cloud PACS vendors. The data is safe and is backed up by the vendor, service provider. They are responsible for the data. It doesn’t need any extra systems or drives to save the files. Storage with cloud systems is huge so they make it easy to back-up data on regular basis.

5. Security

Local PACS

When it comes to security, local systems may not be the best option. The hospitals need to take care and protect the data. Hard drives need to be saved. They can be stolen as well and in such cases all data is lost.

Cloud PACS

In cloud based PACS system, you are safe as well as is your data. As the system is online, no one can access the data or files without permission. Hacking attempts are prevented by using strict security and regular monitoring.
